Erin's Law
Erin’s Law requires all students in Illinois to experience age-appropriate learning opportunities regarding sexual assault and abuse prevention. Mokena SD 159 has developed an age-appropriate continuum of learning opportunities for our children in order to help them be safe throughout our community.
Mokena Elementary School
MES Social Workers use a slideshow to discuss safe and unsafe touches. These slideshow presentations are conducted in the classroom and last approximately 20 minutes.
Mokena Intermediate School
MIS utilizes Guardian Angels for the Erin’s Law presentations. Guardian Angels is a community service organization that provides resources and services for those in need, but also as an educational outreach program. The presentations at MIS focus on relationships: finding trusted adults, safe and unsafe secrets, and the difference between private, safe, and unsafe touches. The discussion begins with a short book which deals with this topic and the discussion ends with scenarios being presented to our students and asking them to consider how they would respond.
Mokena Junior High School
MJHS utilizes a slideshow and presentation that is created by our social workers to address the topics of safe and unsafe secrets, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, dating violence, safe adults and who to contact if something inappropriate occurs. Our students discuss these topics in an age appropriate way during advisory class. Social workers and the school nurse are available for any student who has follow-up questions or concerns.
