Mokena School District 159’s 7th Grade Girls Basketball Team finished their season with a 4th place state trophy.
The team won their first game at the state tournament 48-42 against Minooka despite being down 18 points earlier in the game. The semifinal game was lost 29-39 which placed the team in the 3rd place game later in the week. The girls gave it their all, but came up short 28-44 to place 4th overall in the state.
Coach Don Shaughnessy stated, “The girls were a great group of kids. They played hard and never gave up. They accomplished a lot throughout the season and are coming home with a trophy and a banner to put up on the wall.”
The team finished the regular season with a 19 wins and 1 loss record and were also conference champions.
When asked about her team, player Alyssa Morrill said, “The team all works together. At every practice we worked hard and were very determined to be the best and win. We have very good coaching staff that always helped us have fun and made us work hard at the same time.”
Morrill continued on about their trip to state by sharing, “The state tournament was a cool experience. Out of 100 and something teams we were the top ones down there. We were proud to represent Mokena and get 4th place.”
